All mixed up

Okay, it’s time to break down Blender‘s “100 Greatest Indie Albums Ever,” which appears in the magazine’s December issue. Even though the list is running in a publication like Blender, whose two most-recent covers were given to Jay-Z and Nicole Scherzinger (of that oh-so-hip singing troupe the Pussycat Dolls), they’re not allowed a free pass with this. When you try to out-Spin Spin or out-Magnet Magnet or out-me me, well, you’d better bring it.

And mostly, they do. Including the Chills, Slint, and Mission of Burma on the list is inspired, and placing Pavement, the Pixies and Dinosaur Jr. in the top ten shows they at least care about preserving the integrity of the endeavor. Before I move on, here’s Blender‘s list:

Like most music-related lists published in mainstream magazines, this one is heavy on band diversity and short on common sense. Like, it’s almost undeniable that every Pixies or Smiths or Pavement album is better/greater/more important than anything ever recorded by, say, the Shaggs. So why not include at least Doolittle or The Queen Is Dead or Wowie Zowie over Philosophy of the World? And because a magazine that relies heavily on ads is required to pander to a younger demographic, the editors have included some albums from recent years, which, come on, really shouldn’t be on here. (TV on the Radio? Arctic Monkeys? In the top 100 of all time? Talk to me in a decade.) Plus, there are some notable omissions (see: Doolittle, The Queen Is Dead, Closer, American Water, Psychocandy, and pretty much every Guided By Voices album from the 1990s) at the expense of albums that either totally suck (uh, Le Tigre?) or just aren’t top-100 caliber (uh, Le Tigre?).

But that’s why lists are made: to be disagreed with. And bitching about lists is what makes them fun. Sometimes.

WHY I’M ANGRY TODAY
The Freelancers Union is switching its health-care coverage plans, requiring tons of administrative work here in the offices of John Sellers Industries. And the plan I’m considering switching to is appropriately called a POS. As in “piece of shit.”
